The DESC model is a guideline for assertive communication. When we communicate assertively, with openness and honesty, we are better able to:

  • Give clear and objective feedback
  • Express our feelings without aggression or self-defense
  • Work with others to resolve issues.

DESC – Describe, Express, Specify and Consequences

This communication tool was developed by Sharon and Gordon Bower and discussed more fully in their book, Asserting Yourself. DESC stands for Describe, Express, Specify, and Consequences. Overall, the DESC feedback tool is a helpful framework for providing feedback that is clear, specific, and constructive. It can be used in a variety of settings, from personal relationships to professional contexts, and can help to improve communication, build trust, and promote growth and development.   DESC feedback tool description   Feedback sessions are less of a report card and more of a coaching session. Keep in mind, the point of feedback is to set you up for success, not worry about weakness. No one can be great at everything. Most companies are diverse and we should celebrate the various contributions of our employees.
